WHAT IS ACUPUNCTURE?

Acupuncture is a method of influencing energy in the body through insertion of thin needles at specific acupuncture points. It has been used for thousands of years in Asia and is practiced around the world.

In classical Chinese medical theory, health is maintained by the smooth flow of energy, or Qi ("chee"), through the body in defined channels or "meridians." When Qi is blocked or interrupted, the organs and the body as a whole are not able to function optimally, resulting in illness or pain. Needling acupuncture points unblocks the flow of Qi, restoring balance and allowing the body to heal itself.

Modern scientific research suggests that placing needles in the points releases chemicals locally and in the nervous system. These chemicals affect the perception of pain and stimulate release of natural substances that regulate the smooth functioning of all the body's systems.

Acupuncture has few side effects because treatment seeks to restore balance and the healthy, normal functions of the body. It can be used in combination with most conventional medical treatments without harmful interactions.

Dr. Mauro will discuss your medical history and current treatment, and inform you of possible side effects, before performing any acupuncture.
